I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Aflac. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

With constant changes on the rise in healthcare, we risk finding ourselves completely unaware of the true costs of medical emergencies. We expect our health insurance to mostly cover our family's out-of-pocket medical costs through a crisis, but the fact of the matter is - major medical was not designed to cover everything. So in the case of cancer or a stroke, few expect it to cost as much as a mortgage payment. Plus, in the case of something like a child's broken leg, deductibles, co-pays or rehab add up quickly and can catch you off guard.

When I had my fourth child, we were struggling to make ends meet.  We were slammed with medical bills and were still paying off the bills from my third child!  Our fourth was unexpected, so it wasn't "in our budget."  We like to have money set aside for the unexpected.  However, when one thing comes up...it seems like a billion things come up!  I am sure we can all relate and think of a time when something unexpected came up that we didn't have a "buffer" for.  This happens in our family more times than I would like to admit, but it happens!

Aflac helps prepare families for the often unexpected costs associated with unpredictable illnesses or injuries with their "Real Cost Calculator ." It's super easy to use and illustrates the costs associated with medical conditions.  It takes you through all the steps...first estimated expenses not covered by insurance, then everyday household costs, and finally out of pocket costs during treatment...all the way down to transportation to follow-up medical appointments.   I love that this process shows you how Aflac's supplemental insurance offsets the unexpected costs and serves as a buffer to fill in the gaps of your health care plan.  This will leave you feeling more secure about your family's financial future!

After what we went through after the birth of our fourth child, I have learned that you should always have a plan in action to help cover the cost of the unexpected.  I would have never expected the costs that we were hit with when we had our fourth child.  My husband's insurance kept changing, so, naturally, there were a whole lot of payments that we didn't anticipate.  I loved playing around with the Real Cost Calculator to see different scenarios and what to "expect" when we are hit with the unexpected!
