Preseason Week 2: Packers vs. Cardinals
Well the thoughts I formed while watching this game did not actually occur with me sitting in a recliner. I ended up watching this game with a much better view. Here is what my view looked like:
I was lucky enough to marry into season tickets, so I have had a chance to go to at least one game every year since 1998, my personal record is 6 games in a single season. I love watching replays from old games and thinking to myself, "I saw that first hand". I have also saved the tickets from every game I have went to. Here is what this years tickets look like:
With the first string defense playing with a bend but don't break attitude, they gave up 2 field goals, which should be plenty when you consider the fire power that our offense possesses. However, on this evening our offense got off to a slow start, and was not able to move the ball until they went into the two minute offense. The result was a nice back shoulder throw for a touchdown from Rodgers to Jennings.
The offenses second touchdown came from rookie RB Alex Green, who drove in up the middle from 2 yards out, after catching a screen pass, allowing his blocking to develop, and making some nice moves to move the ball down to the 2. There is an interesting back story on this guy, I suggest you check it out if you are in need of some inspiration. In case you haven't heard anything about him here is a little tid bit, while in college he spent some time living in his car in a Wal-Mart parking lot.
The third touchdown was a spectacular 97 yard pass from Matt Flynn to Chastin West. Backed up to the 3 yard line after a holding penalty on a punt return, West ran past the DB and Flynn lofted a perfect pass about 45 yards down field, hitting West in stride. He was then able to out run the defense for the score, and still had enough energy for a pretty decent Lambeau Leap. One of the best parts about this play was the veteran receivers lining up to congratulate him after he came off the field. Even though these guys are competing for jobs, they get excited when one of them does something great. It will be hard for West to make the team, he had a chance last year after returning a punt for a touchdown against the Colts in the preseason, but was released in the final cut down. There are already 5 receivers on this team that are basically locks to make it, Jennings, Driver, Jones, Nelson, and Cobb. Keeping 6 receivers seems like a lot, especially with the depth they also have at RB and TE. I have read that the coaching staff has been impressed with Diondre Borel, however he didn't help himself by fumbling a kickoff and committing a false start penalty (after which he was removed from the game).
The final touchdown was scored by Kerry Taylor on a pass from Graham Harrell. Harrell looked pretty good, his development will make the inevitable loss of Flynn a little more bearable.
The backup defense was able to hold on for the win. Brandion Ross at first got beat on a big pass play, but made up for it by intercepting a pass in the endzone to kill the Cardinals rally. The play of some of the young DBs may lead to the end of Pat Lee's run as a Packer. He has been injured multiple years and never really developed as you would think a 2nd round draft pick should. He played pretty good in the Super Bowl after being forced into action following the injuries to Woodson and Shields, but I wouldn't think playing well for one half of football would merit staying on the team, even if that game was the most important game of the year.
McCarthy got a little animated at times late in the game when some of the young guys missed some tackles or other assignments. Hopefully the team gets even better this year on its way to a repeat.
I noticed that they have not yet put up the year for the 13th world championship, my guess is they are waiting to unveil this at the kickoff game against the Saints on September 8th.
RECIPE
Well since I wasn't at home I didn't make anything to eat. But in preparation for next week here is an idea to try out. This came from Food Network Magazine Super Bowl related issue.
Warm and Creamy Bacon Dip:
8 oz softened cream cheese
2 cups sour cream
3 oz bacon bits
2 cups shredded cheddar
1 cup chopped onion
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Combine all ingredients in a bowl, place in a baking dish. Cover and heat 25 to 30 minutes or until hot. Serve with sliced french bread, crackers, and/or chips.
This sounded pretty good, I am going to make it for Fridays game.

This weeks question revolves around a great Super Bowl XLV memory. I recently re-watched the game on DVR, and really like this play because of the "teamwork" involved in causing it. Which Packer player caused the pressure on Ben Roethlisberger leading to Nick Collins interception and touchdown, which put the Packers up 14-0?
